Back to the Cemeteries

Sunday 04/17/2005 1:50 PM

Back to the cemeteries... This one may surprise you because it might not turn out like you think.

Remember The Asylum? Well, we're there again, and I'll start you off with a fairly innocuous image for today, which will give me a chance to share another writing sample with you.

The point where this picture was taken is just a few steps from this scene in Unscattering:

The first time I suspected something was wrong, it was a warm summer night and I was walking the boys at The Asylum — the usual routine we've repeated thousands of times now.

On the old shadowed path leading from the parking lot down the hill through the woods, I was just past the edge of the street lamp light, nestled in the darkness. Chauncey galloped across the parking lot, raised nose waving side to side as he analyzed the night air. He crossed the edge of the freshly landscaped grass where the asphalt once continued down from the parking lot, and his paws found the old macadam leading into the woods. As he moved steadily closer, toward me, I anticipated his usual close passing, often brushing past my legs, as he crossed the threshold into the pitch. Only this time he struck me — head on — with a yelp.

It was the second and third collisions in the dark over the next week or so that convinced me: Something was wrong.

In preparation for tomorrow's chapter, look at today's photo and get your creative juices flowing. Imagine veering right, walking across the parking lot and then disappearing into the overgrown green behind the building. What does it look like back there? Is it even safe?

More tomorrow as we begin our step-by-step walk down a forgotten trail and discover parts of The Asylum rarely seen by man as we get closer and closer to our final cemetery in this series.
