The lotus tuber arrived on my front porch. Yes, that is Sheriff's nose sticking out through the cat door. (20060 File Under: I Took This Photo!; Lotus Flower; Panasonic DMC-LX1K Lumix Digital Camera; Sheriff |
Umm... I forgot to tell you about the lotus flower. About a year, while blog hopping, I found a collection of blogs that appear to be run by the same guy: C. Miller. First, there is Terminal Jet Lag. Then Lomo Love. Next is Cancer News Watch. Finally, the least updated of the bunch is Malarial Blog.
All of these blogs are great in their own way, but it was that last one that intrigued me with its pictures and descriptions of a lotus flower. I had heard of lotus flowers, but didn't really know anything about them. Having spent the last seven or eight years struggling to grow jade plants on the front porch (I tend to neglect them for months at a time and my jade plant collection collection becomes more a test of Darwin's survival of the fittest or, in this case, the heartiest), I decided it was time to branch out to lotus flowers.
If you dig back through the older posts on Terminal Jet Lag, you'll find a page called Planting a Lotus. It was on that page that I found the link to Bonnie's Plants. Clicking as fast I could, I hopped over to Bonnie's web site only to discover the most heartbreaking of news: Lotus flowers grow best/easiest when you start with a tuber and tubers are only available during a small window in February. Because it was well past February, my only recourse was to subscribe to Bonnie's mailing list so I could be notified next year (now this year) when new tubers were available. I then promptly forgot about lotus flowers.
Imagine my surprise when, a few weeks ago, I got an e-mail from Bonnie saying that tubers were for sale and would be shipping soon. I called Candy into my office and we picked out one (no, I'm not telling) and I ordered it.
Within the last week, I bought the following items from Esposito's:
Today, I talked to Bonnie and she said to take the aquatic plant soil back and get more manure. So I went and did just that. Then, when I got home, there was a package from Bonnie sitting on my front porch.
More later and, yes, this is the beginning of a new series. So stay tuned, dear friend and reader.
