Worst Movie of the Year

Monday 12/11/2006 1:58 AM

So I'm sitting at one of my clients' offices last week talking to Ray. I've known Ray for years since back in my DEP days. Now he works for SWIX, a client I've had for years.

Whenever Ray and I get together, we talk movies. What he's seen. What I've liked. What we're excited about.

We're doing our usual bit chatting about the flicks out this holiday season. All of sudden he looks at me straight on to get my attention and says, "Peter, I gotta tell you about this one movie. It was the worst movie I've seen since Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Nancy dragged me and the family to it and we all hated it. She was the only one who seemed to like it."

I put my hand up, interrupting him, and ask him, "You saw The Fountain didn't you?"

His eyes widen. He cocks his head and asks, "How'd you know?"

"Lucky guess," I say.

"Have you seen it?" he asks me, and I pause for a moment.

There was the first time with my buddy Jonathan. Then the next time with Jonathan again when he was seeing it for his third time. Then there was when I took my friend Sheila to see it. Then last Thursday when I went by myself on what I feared was the last nite in town for The Fountain.

I wonder how Ray'll react to the truth and decide to fudge it a bit. I hold up three fingers, and he is shocked. Ray asks me, "Are you shitting me?"

I shake my head and explain that I liked it a lot, but readily concede that it's a difficult movie. He agrees and goes on to tell me that at the beginning he and his son were really jazzed with Hugh Jackman fighting the Mayans, but then it just got all weird. He says, "I wish I would have had some of that whacky weed so I could make some sense out of it."

I nod my head and talk to him a little about it without going into my full-blown Fountain fanaticism. He says his wife, Nan, was trying to figure it all out and was ticked off at the rest of them for not giving it a try.

Then I pulled up the 300 trailer for him to watch on his Mac, and we forgot all about The Fountain.
