Last night's episode of Nature on PBS was titled Why We Love Cats and Dogs. I only caught the tail end of it, but I saw enough to set my DVR to record the re-broadcast in the wee hours of the morning. In the part that I saw, they tell the story of Jerry, a German Shepherd, owned by Jim and Rene Nelson. After Jerry lost one of his front legs to bone cancer, Jim and Rene sold their home and business and then hit the road with Jerry to enjoy the great outdoors.
In the show, you see the moment when they learn that Jerry's cancer has returned and he has only a few months to live. After that, as he wrestles with coming to terms with the inevitable, Jim talks about how Jerry's been visiting him in his dreams:
“He's spoken to me in my dreams lately, as if he knows what's coming... and he doesn't care.”
Made me cry.
