Bet It All On Black

Saturday 07/16/2005 12:51 AM

What a great night.

CardPlayer magazine has been providing a live internet audio feed of the final table of the World Series of Poker Main Event. It started a week ago with about 5,600 people paying $10,000 each to play for a first place prize of $7.5 million and now they are down to the final seven.

This won't be televised until October and even then it will be edited down. The live commentary is fantastic and the play is just riveting.

They are just back from the dinner break and are about to start up again.

The last hand before the break featured Andrew Black re-raising another $5 million over the top of Aaron Kanter's re-raise after the flop. Kanter folded and Andrew Black is now the chip leader with $18 million in chips. Kanter is in second with about $10 million.

My pick to win is Irishman Andrew Black, not because he is in the lead right now, but because of his play and his story. How can you not root for a guy who gave up poker to study Buddhism for a few years.

Earlier in the tournament, due to some confusion over last minute rule changes, someone was late getting back from break. Andrew Black intentionally delayed time on all his hands to buy the other player time to get back. The tournament officials had to call time on Andrew every hand to speed it along. What a class act.

Well, I'll be up all nite listening to this. I'll keep you posted on how Andrew does.

01:08 AM Daniel Bergsdorf just went out in 7th when his JJ lost to 10-10 when a 10 hit on the flop. Tex Barch is now in 2nd with about $14 million. And commentator Phil Helmeuth lost a $1,000 sidebet on the river card to Eric Lindgren who laid him 6 to 1 odds. After the bad beats already seen tonite, Phil was betting that Bergsdorf was gonna win with a straight on the river. Andrew Black is still number one.

Trivia: On day one of this tournament, players were busting out at a rate of one player going out every seven seconds for the first five hours.

01:29 AM Andrew Black puts Scott Lazar in with JJ. Lazar calls with Q-10. No miracles this time and we're down to 5 and Andrew Black has further solidified his lead with (I'm guessing here) about $20 million.

02:36 AM Andrew Black just dropped to third when he lost a $15 million pot to Aaron Kanter's kings full of threes. Still five people in it.

04:07 AM With a flop of 9-6-5, one spade and two clubs, Steve Dannenmann re-raises all-in. After a careful study, Andrew Black calls the additional $6 million with 9-10. Danneman shows A-6 in spades. Black is a 3 to 1 favorite to win. The turn is a blank. The river is an ace and Danneman doubles up. And Andrew Black is hurting bad with only about 2 or 3 million in chips. Phenomenal call. Terrible luck.

04:11 AM Andrew Black raises all-in on the very next hand with A-8 suited. Aaron Kanter calls him with 4-4. An A and an 8 on the flop and no miracle 4 follows. Andrew Black is in 4th with about $7 million.

05:06 AM Andrew Black raises all-in with 10-10. Steve Dannenmann calls with A-K and catches a K on the turn. My man is out in 5th, but don't shed too many tears for him — he's now $1.75 million richer.

Well, I finally fell asleep on the floor of my office around 6:30 this morning and they were still at 4 people. I woke up off and on as big hands developed. It finally finished up around 10 AM (7 AM Vegas time) when Joseph Hachem from Australia won it all.

For a poker enthusiast, other than playing at the final table of the WSOP Main Event, there's nothing better than getting the commentary from the pros while the hands play out WITHOUT the benefit of the card cam. Great night. Awesome experience.
