An Unexpected Utensil

Thursday 07/21/2005 12:54 AM

It wouldn't take a brain surgeon to figure out I've been working on another batch of marsala sauce. Candy and I bought filet mignon and chicken breasts this evening in anticipation of a lovely meal together. Comedy of errors, yadda yadda yadda and all of a sudden I'm standing in line at Whataburger for a chicken sandwich.

Well it gives me another night to work on the sauce. I always like to mix it up — I just can't leave well enough alone. Remember when I started off with red and yellow sweet peppers? Well, this time I added some roasted garlic in with the shallots and instead of thyme, I used a couple pieces of rosemary.

If you've never seen a picture of rosemary, it's basically like a little sprig from a pine tree. I guess I left them in too long because when I pulled the two sprigs out they were bare. And the sauce was filled with little needles of rosemary.

Now I know some people really dig their rosemary, but I'm not too thrilled with the idea of chomping on those little needles. I tried using a fork to fish them out, but that didn't work.

Wanna guess where this is going?

Well, I ended up in the bathroom to get the tweezers and spent the next 20 minutes picking out the vast majority of rosemary needles from the marsala sauce, needle by bloody needle. Yes, I washed the tweezers before and after so stop making that face.

Candy and I are going to try again tomorrow to have a nice quiet evening at home. Here's hoping.

The music of the moment is the wonderful Senegalese band Orchestra Baobab. Broaden your horizons today and click the Amazon link in the music info below and at least listen to a couple of the music samples there.

Live a little. Take a chance.
