You Have Got To Be Kidding Me

Saturday 09/17/2005 2:09 AM

OK, so this blind guy is stranded in New Orleans after flood. The National Guard picks him up in a helicopter, but you know all about their policy of not picking up people's animals too, right? Well, they leave his seeing eye dog behind.

Just when I thought I had seen the worst of it, along comes another story that just kicks me in the gut.

If this wasn't a family friendly blog, you'd see a long string of extremely colorful language spewing across your screen right now.

I subscribe to a mailing list of information regarding the pet rescue efforts. This was posted a few days ago:

One of the cases was an ATF dog that had drunk some of the water, and his abdomen swelled, and he was trying to throw up, and was really obviously ill. The military contacted Deb's clinic, somehow (phones are working intermittently), and Deb told them it sounded like torsion, and they needed to get him there asap. They loaded him right up on a Black Hawk helicopter, and flew him to the causeway nearest the clinic. Deb met them, transported the dog to the clinic and had him on the OR table within half an hour. They saved his life. They are hopeful this will give them a good 'in' with the powers that be to be allowed into the flooded areas to get those animals out.

Now if they can take an ATF dog on a Black Hawk helicopter, they can sure as heck take an old blind man's seeing eye dog on a National Guard helicopter.

But don't despair too much over this injustice, Dear Reader. As your Link of the Day explains, this is one Katrina animal story that had a happy ending.
